Dr. Magliato is one of the few female cardiothoracic surgeons in the world. She is currently the Director of Women’s Cardiac Services at Saint John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica, California, where she is developing a Women’s Heart Center to address the cardiac needs of female patients. Dr. Magliato is also developing a Ventricular Assist Device Program to treat end-stage heart failure patients. Prior to joining Saint John’s Medical Center, Dr. Magliato was a Heart and Lung Transplant Surgeon as well as Director of the Mechanical Assist Device Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Magliato received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at Union College in Schenectady, New York where she graduated with Cum Laude honors. After earning her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr Magliato completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Akron General Medical Center. Further postgraduate training included a research fellowship in thoracic organ transplantation at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor and a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr Magliato also completed a fellowship in heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and ventricular assist devices at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2006, she earned an executive MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Dr. Magliato is a member of many professional societies, including the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the Association of Women Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. With the surgical treatment of congestive heart failure her primary focus, Dr Magliato has served as either principal investigator or co-investigator for many clinical trials and has contributed numerous articles and abstracts to the medical literature. Additionally, she has a keen interest in promoting cardiac health for women and was recently asked to be on the Board of the American Heart Association. In July, she assumed the position of President of the Greater Los Angeles County American Heart Association Board of Directors and is the first woman to ever hold this title.

Dr. Magliato’s areas of expertise include congestive heart failure, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, heart disease in women and artificial heart technology. She has served as a consultant to a wide array of biotechnology companies including start-up ventures, privately held companies and mature public companies. Currently she is overseeing the clinical trial of the Jarvik artificial heart for the United States. Dr. Magliato holds a patent on a non-invasive, non-imaging medical device that can detect the earliest signs of impending heart disease. She, along with 2 partners, has formed a company, Cordex systems, LLC to bring the device to market. Dr. Magliato is the recipient of many national and regional awards including the Women’s Leadership Exchange Compass Award, Exceptional Woman of the Year Award in Boston and, in 2006, was initiated into the American College of Surgeons. She has also been highlighted by the media as an expert in heart disease and has been seen on ABC, CBS, NBC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic Explorer, The Doctors, as well as being featured on WebMD and Fox News. She has also been featured in SHAPE magazine and COSMOPOLITAN. On February 4th, she will be featured in an upcoming Barbara Walters 20/20 special concerning heart disease that will include Bill Clinton, David Letterman, Charlie Rose, Robin Williams and Regis Philbin.

With over two hundred speaking engagements, she is a sought after lecturer and has been an invited speaker on a multitude of topics to professional audiences throughout the world. Her memoir, Heart Matters, was recently published by Random House and received a 4 (out of 4) star rating in People Magazine and a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. It has now been released in its paperback version, Heart Matters.

Dr. Magliato lives in Pacific Palisades with her husband, a Liver Transplant surgeon, and their two sons, ages 6 and 8.
